In the 1900’s, Bishop Charles McDonnell, the Diocese’s second bishop, started to acquire the lands that now comprise St. Charles Cemetery. The land was acquired from the Archdiocese of New York, Pinelawn Cemetery, and various individual owners. After Bishop McDonnell passed away in 1921, the Diocese’s third bishop, Archbishop Thomas Molloy, completed the purchase of lands that now form St. Charles Cemetery. Resurrection Cemetery, the portion of the land bordering Wellwood Avenue, was originally created and operated by the Archdiocese of New York, and in 1953, Archbishop Molloy arranged for the purchase of this cemetery from the Archdiocese.
When the Diocese of Rockville Centre was established in 1957, the combined lands that formed St. Charles/Resurrection Cemeteries were retained by the Diocese of Brooklyn to serve the future needs of families of the Diocese, as well as family members on Long Island who wished to choose the same Catholic cemetery as their relatives. Today, St. Charles/Resurrection Cemeteries serve Catholics throughout the area.
In 2007, St. Charles/Resurrection Cemeteries were transferred from the Diocese of Brooklyn to Saint John’s Cemetery Corporation to enhance the supervision and operation of these cemeteries. The Saint John’s Cemetery Corporation was created in 1872 by a special act of the New York State Legislature at the request of the first Bishop of Brooklyn, Bishop John Loughlin, for the newly established St. John’s Cemetery located in Middle Village, NY. Today it owns and operates all the cemeteries for the Brooklyn Diocese.

Daily and Special Masses
Mass intentions are offered daily for the souls of all who are interred in our cemeteries.
Special Field Masses are celebrated at our Cemeteries on Memorial Day and on All Souls Day.
Mass is celebrated every Thursday at 9:30 AM in our Chapel of the Good Shepherd, located within the Welcome Center.

Shuttle Service
Shuttle service is provided at no charge to and from the Pinelawn LIRR station on the specified Sunday of each month from 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM, as well as certain holidays.
Shuttle service dates for 2024:
January 7th, February 11th, March 10th, April 7th, May 12th, June 9th, July 7th, August 11th, September 8th, October 6th, November 10th, and December 8th, as well as the following holidays (New Years Day, Martin Luther King Day, Memorial Day, Father’s Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, All Souls Day, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day).
Driving Directions to St. Charles / Resurrection Cemeteries
- Long Island Expressway (495) Eastbound – to exit 49 south, follow the service road to the 3rd traffic light and make a right onto Pinelawn Road heading south. Once you cross over the railroad tracks Pinelawn turns into Wellwood Avenue. Approx 1 mile after crossing over RR tracks make a right into main entrance. Follow signs to Main Office.
- Long Island Expressway (495) Westbound – to exit 49 north, make left at light onto Pinelawn Road. Once on Pinelawn Road follow LIE “eastbound” directions above
- Northern State Parkway Westbound or Eastbound – Exit 40 south onto (Rt. 110). Take 110 south to Pinelawn Road and make a left. Once on Pinelawn road follow LIE “eastbound” directions above
- Southern State Parkway West or Eastbound – Exit 35 Wellwood Avenue. Proceed north on Wellwood Avenue Approx 1 mile. Main entrance is on your left. Follow signs to Main Office
- Midtown Tunnel – Long Island Expressway (495) Eastbound. Follow LIE eastbound directions above.
- Triborough Bridge – Grand Central Parkway Eastbound to LIE exit eastbound. Stay on LIE to exit 49 south. Follow the LIE eastbound directions above.
- Belt Parkway Eastbound – To the Southern State Parkway eastbound. Follow directions for Southern State from above.
- Whitestone or Throgs Neck Bridge – To Cross Island Parkway southbound to the LIE eastbound, follow directions above for LIE eastbound.
- From South Central N.J. – Take I-95 north to exit 10 Metuchen (Rt. 440). Follow signs to 440 Verrazano Bridge. Take upper level of bridge and stay in left most lane to exit easily onto Belt Parkway heading eastbound. Once on Belt Parkway follow directions from Brooklyn above.
- George Washington Bridge – To Cross Bronx Expressway and follow signs to the Throgs Neck Bridge. Once on the bridge follow directions from the Bronx above.
- I-95 south into New York – Then follow New England Thruway (95) south to exit for Throgs Neck Expressway (Rt. 695), then follow signs for Throgs Neck Bridge. Once on the bridge follow directions from the Bronx above.
